Valve are venturing into the world of portable gaming. Here’s what you need to learn about the latest Steam Deck.
Valve is venturing into the arena for handheld gaming. The Steam Deck, a handheld device that really can play every game in your Steam library, will be released this year, according to speculations. It’s essentially a PC version of the Nintendo Switch, although the Steam Deck can do a bunch more than just play a game.
well that’s because it isn’t a game console at all, but rather a portable computer. According to Valve, you can connect it into a monitor or a TV, install apps and software, view video content, and even put other game storefronts on it. The Steam Deck will run on a revamped edition of SteamOS, Valve’s Unix operating system, with the ability to play Windows titles that do not have native Linux support.
Everything we know about the Steam Deck has been included here.
When will the Steam Deck be available?
The Steam Deck will begin shipping in December 2021.
Which doesn’t guarantee you’ll get one this year if you reserved one, as the Steam Deck site now shows clearly “anticipated order availability” in Q2 2022 for every variant of the Deck for both UK and the US.
This, too, might differ depending on your location, but it might either indicate an initial miscalculation in the predicted shipment date, or that Valve has taken more reservations for the higher-spec Deck than it had anticipated, and has since modified manufacturing priorities correspondingly.
What’s happening with Steam Deck reservations?
The Steam Deck can already be reserved at $5 (£4), albeit Steam’s servers were instantly overloaded as the reservation webpage came online. Customers wanting to reserve a Steam Deck was met with timeouts and error warnings, but those who attempted many times were told they would have to wait a while before trying again since they were attempting to make “a lot of transactions in the last few ours.”
“When inventory is available, customers will be notified in the order reservations were made to make their purchase,” says Valve.
Should you decide to order a Steam Deck, the £4 deposit will go toward the cost, but it’ll be refunded if users change their opinion and withdraw.
Currently, the Steam Deck can only be reserved for the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union. The very first Steam Decks will indeed be delivered in December, however the projected fulfilment date has been extended back to 2022 as demand grows.
What is the price of the Steam Deck?
The pricing of the Steam Deck is determined by whatever variant customers choose, and there are three SKUS depending on storage capacity. The Steam Deck is priced at:
The 64GB variant costs $399.
The 256GB variant costs $529.
The 512GB variant costs $649.
The much more costly Steam Deck versions feature significantly faster NVMe Inbuilt storage, while the more affordable option comes with a 64GB eMMC (embedded multi-media card) storage device. At the very least, all three variants will help to expand storage capacity using a MicroSD card.
Steam Deck specs?
Valve disclosed the Steam Deck specifications alongside the device, so we finally know everything about just what is underneath the 7-inch display.
The most crucial thing for Pc users to know is that the Steam Deck is powered by an AMD APU, something we haven’t seen before. This chip is based on two of AMD’s most popular frameworks: Zen 2 and RDNA 2.
The Zen 2 architecture is the same as that present inside AMD Ryzen 3000 cpus, and there are 4 Zen 2 cores within the Steam Deck, consisting of eight threads, prepared for any handheld gaming requirements.
The portable PC’s graphics horsepower is powered by the RDNA 2 architecture. The Steam Deck is fitted with 8 Compute Units (CUs), totalling 512 cores. That isn’t a large number as the Xbox Series S has 20 RDNA 2 That isn’t a large number as the Xbox Series S has 20 RDNA 2. However, it appears that 720p or 800p will work (out of the box) without difficulty.

Valve has chosen a 1280 x 800 resolution for you to enjoy your games while on the go. The Steam Deck’s touchscreen is a 60Hz LCD panel with 400-nits brightness, which isn’t much to write home about. However, because it’s only 7 inches wide, its flaws may not be as obvious as they would be on one of the top gaming monitors.
Furthermore, Valve recently revised the Stream Deck’s RAM specifications, making the memory specification better than it had been previously. Unlike of the dual-channel RAM that was previously indicated, we now have 16GB of quad-channel LPDDR5 at 5,500MT/s. For just an APU-powered workstation such as this, that’s a major deal—the greater memory throughput, the better.
How can I find out when my Steam Deck will be delivered?
Head to the Steam Deck shop page on the login that you used to make your Steam Deck reservation, you’ll see an estimated order availability displayed beneath the cancel button. We recommend keeping this until the date as this is fully refundable.
Steam Deck performance?
Valve has already been promoting gaming experience on their new handheld gaming Machine & claims that it is “incredible.” “All the games we want to be playable is, really, the entire Steam library. We haven’t really found something we could throw at this device that it couldn’t handle.”
“We’ve achieved the level of performance that is required to really run the latest generation of games without problems.” is another quote from IGN
Is it possible to use the Steam Deck for purposes other than Steam games?
You can, and you might be able to do a lot more. The Steam Deck, like your PC, is designed to have been an open platform. You may install Windows and other game marketplaces, such as Origin and Epic games on your Steam Deck.
Valve designer Lawrence Yang said. “If you buy a Steam Deck, it’s a PC. You can install whatever you want on it, you can attach any peripherals you want to it.”
